How to Pack Fragile Items So Nothing Breaks

Start with the right materials

Good packing starts with good materials: sturdy boxes in the right sizes, packing paper, bubble wrap, and strong tape. Don't overload large boxes with heavy items — use small boxes for heavy things like books and dishes, and larger boxes for light, bulky items.

Line the bottom of each fragile box with crumpled packing paper for cushioning, and fill empty gaps so nothing shifts in transit. Movement is what breaks things.

Dishes, glasses, and stemware

Wrap each plate individually in packing paper, then stack plates on their edge (vertically) rather than flat — they're far more resistant to breaking that way. Glasses and stemware should be wrapped individually and packed in a box with cell dividers when possible.

Label these boxes clearly as fragile and note which room they belong to. The clearer the label, the more carefully they'll be handled and the easier they'll be to unpack.

Electronics and TVs

If you still have the original boxes for your electronics, use them. If not, wrap screens in a blanket or bubble wrap and pack them upright. Photograph the cable connections on the back before unplugging so reassembly is simple.

Professional movers can remove wall-mounted TVs and pad them properly — if you're booking full service, leave the trickiest electronics to the crew.

Art, mirrors, and true valuables

Mirrors and framed art should be protected on the corners and faces and moved on edge. For genuinely irreplaceable or high-value items, consider keeping them with you rather than on the truck.

When in doubt, ask your movers. A good crew packs fragile items every day and would rather take an extra minute wrapping something than risk damage.
